Textile Artist Natural Dye Residencies

SKU: TANDR Category:

A textile artist natural dye residency at the Threads of Life natural dye studio offers practitioners a unique opportunity to work in a production studio with professional natural dyers while deepening their experience of using indigo, plant-sourced mordanting, tannin browns, yellows, and mud dye. The studio teaches batik, some shibori methods, and mud dye painting as surface design techniques, and residents are also encouraged to bring their own skills and practices to the space. Residencies are intended for artistic exploration and natural dye practice and are not available for production-scale work.

Access to and use of the studio is for weekdays from 9.30 am to 6 pm, with a one hour break for a delicious lunch from the Umajati Retreat kitchen. Those who have attended a multi-day workshop at the studio, and have learned the studio work processes, may start their own work immediately without close supervision from studio staff. For those who are new to the studio, two days of one-to-one teaching from one of the workshop staff are needed to communicate the basics of our natural dye techniques, our scouring (pre-washing) and finishing (post-washing) practices, and how we expect residents to work in the studio.

Availability

The artist residency is available weekdays, whenever the studio is not closed for a Balinese holiday, and as long as a multi-day residential workshop is not being held.

The studio can accommodate two people at a time in the residency.

Indigo paste and powder, Ceriops tagal extract, Symplocos cochinchinensis leaf powder, and our Dyers’ Soap are all available for purchase after the workshop for use at home, and are provided complete with the paperwork needed to clear customs in your country.

Our indigo is produced from Strobilanthes cusia (Assam indigo). Browns are made with Ceriops tagal extract and Woodfordia floribunda. Mordanting uses leaves of Symplocos cochinchinensis (an aluminium hyper-accumulating plant). Yellow is made from Artocarpus heterophyllus (jackwood). Mud is from nearby rice fields. Our scouring and finishing soap is hand made from cold-pressed Aleurites moluccana oil.

Workshop Leaders

Artist residencies will be led by Threads of Life’s dye studio staff Komang Sujata, Wayan Sukadana and Made Maduarta, who together bring 35 years of experience to the teaching of this workshop. Focusing on traditions that have degraded and are being recovered, they document local dye recipes and processes in the field, and test them in the studio before taking suggested refinements back to the communities. In the dye garden, they establish cultivation and harvesting methods to address plant resource scarcity being faced by traditional dyers. In the studio, they lead half-day up to weeklong workshops, both for indigenous weavers and international students. Their approach to natural dyeing seeks plant-sourced dyes by plant-sourced processes and avoids synthetic additives or mordants.

William, Komang, Wayan, and Made are the workshop leaders

Natural Dye Studio

The artist residency will be held at the Threads of Life natural dye studio and the Bebali Foundation dye plant garden on the grounds of Umajati Retreat where artist residents will be accommodated. The studio is used for research, teaching and production dyeing. Studio dyers research traditional dye recipes by performing controlled variations of traditional dye recipes from across the archipelago to understand the functions of different plants on the dye processes and to address problems partner communities may be having with their dye colours. Studio teachers work both with indigenous dyers in the field, and offer half-day and weeklong workshops to the public at the studio. Production dyeing is also performed for our commercial customers to create markets for natural dyes sourced from our partner communities. The dye garden is both a collection of over a hundred dye plant species and a source of plant material for the studio experimental work.

Residential Accommodations

This workshop will be held at the Threads of Life natural dye studio and the Bebali Foundation dye plant garden, both of which are on the grounds of the Umajati Retreat where residential participants will be accommodated.

The Kokokan House at Umajati Retreat is a self-contained cottage made from recycled wood that overlooks the dye plant garden. It accommodates two people in either king-size or twin beds with an en-suite bathroom and ceiling fans. Breakfast is included and will be served by the daytime staff, who also clean the house. Upon request, they will prepare a dinner from our reasonably priced menu of healthy and vegetarian food for you to self-serve.

Umajati is a lush garden property with a shared swimming pool that offers easy access by scheduled complimentary shuttle to Ubud’s many restaurants, spas, and cultural opportunities.

SPECIFIC TERMS & CONDITIONS
Threads of Life offers two kinds of workshop: those taught by our in-house team of dyers and researchers, and those taught by outside teachers. TERMS & CONDITIONS FOR A WORKSHOP TAUGHT BY AN OUTSIDE TEACHER

PARTICIPANT CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS FOR A WORKSHOP TAUGHT BY AN OUTSIDE TEACHER

Maximum and minimum group size are as stated the “Workshop” tab of the event’s webpage. If participation fails to meet the minimum group size by 90 days before the workshop start date the workshop may have to be cancelled. We therefore recommend participants wait to buy their tickets to Bali, and if they are non-residential participants to pay for their accommodations, until we confirm by email that the minimum participation has been achieved.
