The shoulder cloth became used throughout the Indonesian Archipelago when the woman’s blouse called a kebaya became nationalized. Prior to this a shoulder cloth was not part of traditional dress.

This textiles comes from the southern coast of Lembata island facing out to the Savu Sea. Most people on this coast line spend their time fishing. The motif on this textile is a samoini comes from the word Samo which is a name of an ancestor from long ago. Ina is honorific for mother – samoina refers to the first ancestor who created motifs on these textiles.

Warp ikat, single panel, twisted fringe, commercial cotton, natural dyes.
