This shoulder cloth uses the traditional motifs that are found on the red, blue, black sekomandi textiles. The black and white using tannins from Homolanthus sp. and mud – this black and white colouring predates the use of reds and blues among this ethnic group the To Mangki Karataun in the mountainous area of Sulawesi.
The primary ikat motif is called ulu karua which refers to the eight traditional leaders each having specific roles in the community such as ritual, land administration, agricultural cycles and social relationships.
