This shoulder cloth uses the traditional motifs that are found on the red, blue, black sekomandi textiles. The black and white uses tannins from Homolanthus sp. and mud – this black and white colouring predates the use of reds and blues among this ethnic group the To Mangki Karataun in the high mountains of Sulawesi.
The primary ikat motif on this textile is called tosso balekoan which represents a niddy-noddy that is used for making skeins of yarn after being spun from cotton.
Warp ikat, single panel, open fringe, commercial cotton, natural dyes. Made by Lilis Suriani in Sulawesi, 2019.
