Selendang or shoulder scarf is a single panel textile that is made with ikat motifs using the red, blues and blacks of a sekomandi made by weavers in central Sulawesi who call themselves To Mangki Karataun. The shoulder scarf became used throughout the Indonesian archipelago when the woman’s top called kebaya became the national dress.
We have curated a set of three sekomandi shoulder cloths for you to hang together or separately. The motifs on the textiles from left to right are lelen sepu which refers to the betelnut bag carried by women that contains the lime, betelnut and sirih leaf for chewing betel. It is polite to always offer betelnut by both the host and visitor, pattaka kariango an important medicinal plant (Acorus calamus). The last textile contains the motif is ulu karua which refers to the eight traditional leaders who have specific roles and responsibilities for the well being of their community.
