A textile of this size would be used to decorate the traditional house during a ceremony as it is a sign that the entire ritual cycle has been performed and that the family have fulfilled their obligation to their ancestors. The motif is called tobo sepu. Tobo means carving and sepu refers to a a betelnut bag carried by women that contains lime, betelnut and siririh leaf for chewing betel. It is polite to always have betelnut offered between both the host and the visitors. The tobo sepu motif is also found on the walls of the traditional rice barn – symbolizing harmony.
