This textile is called Po’uk Atoni from the area of Kupang in Timor. Textiles from these areas are similar in design, sharing many of the same motifs. The man’s hip cloth generally has a white centerfield which is characteristic of people who are ethnically Atoni. The Atoni are the predominant ethnic group of western Timor. A man’s formal dress would wrap first the Tai Muti hip cloth, then the Tai Tnana and finally the Po’uk Atoni on the outside.

The central ikat motif is called kret pan buat refers to a serrated leaf pattern found on a small box. This textile is lovely as a wall hanging or used as an accent on a bed or table.

Warp ikat, supplementary warp patterning, single panel, open fringe, commercial cotton, natural dyes. Ikat tied, dyed, and woven in Kupang, Timor, 2019.
