There are at least six important textiles used by the ethnic group of To Mangki people of on the western mountain range of Toraja who refer to themselves as Toraja Karataun.

This extraordinary four and half meter pori londong is a single panel with a mix of the important ikat motifs on it. Pori means ikat and londong means long cloth. It would be used for ceremonies such as a funeral procession where the cloth would be carried above the heads of family members, ceremonially connecting them to the deceased.

The central motif on this textile include; Tobo alang which refers to the carvings on a rice barn, Other motifs include; dasi bone motif references a bird called dasi tumape, often seen fishing along the river banks. Over time the name has changed to dasi bone – bone meaning river. This motif is found in the center of other motifs and is always dyed indigo blue to indicate its colour. As this motif is always found in the center of the textile or a motif it may have spiritual meaning as well. Dappu’ which is like a maltese-cross like pattern- complete without breaks. However, within the motif there are breaks in the pattern, to remind us that within any relationship there will be the things that create disharmony and separation. We need to be aware of this potential and work to avoid conflict. Kate‘ is an adze or tool that is used to carve or smooth wood. Adze date back to the Stone Age. It is a reference to the importance of such an instrument in daily life. The kate‘ often appears alongside other similar motifs taken from everyday life, such as dasi bone

This stunning cloth is of of incredibly high quality and will be beautiful as a wall hanging or used as throw.
