These elegant placemats are made from locally grown handspun cotton and woven in East Java. They are trimmed with intricate patterned cotton cloth made in Mamasa, Sulawesi using a card weaving technique called Palawa. There are few of women who can still make these card woven textiles. Threads of Life has worked with this small group for 12 years to support this artform. The set of 4 napkins are a heavy weight cotton.
The napkins and placemats were dyed by the Threads of Life Natural Dye Studio using only sustainably harvested materials to achieve the colours of; indigo using Strobailanthes cusia, mustard Artocarpus heterophyllus wood, deep rust Ceriops tegal bark. Ceriops tegal bark is harvested from locally managed FSC Mangrove system in Papua.
