Patan is the name for a textile in east Flores when the textile is not yet sewn into a woman’s sarong. A patan is used as a wedding gift for traditional communities in this area. Gifts such as textiles and animals are exchanged at marriage between the bride and groom’s families as a means of creating indebtedness.

The prominent ikat motif is locally called Korasong Manu Walu which means the livers of eight chickens. Livers of chickens and pigs are read during ceremonies as a means of communicating with the ancestors. This textile would traditionally be cut at the horizontal borders and sewn into as two panels to create a woman’s sarong.

This would be lovely used as a throw on a chair or bed.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
