Woman's Skirt

IDR 10,000,000

Item Code: 1999241

The bird in flight represents the nuri or lorikeet (Trichoglossus haemotodus) on this Sumbanese woman’s skirt. Like the lorikeet that stays within its flock it is a reminder that humans should also work together as a group to bring about great well-being for the whole community.

This can refer both to important decisions arising from the consensus decision making, to working together to complete tasks such as harvesting groups.

Warp ikat, two panels stitched together and sewn into a tube, commercial cotton, natural dyes.
Made in Pahunga Loda, Kaliuda, East Sumba, c.1970
