Komben refers to a single panel of cloth that is usually worn as a hip wrap. This particular batik was made in Java for the Sumatra market. The structure of the composition on this batik is typical of Sumatra cloths with flora patterns filling the centerfield of this stunning textile. Gold leaf was hand painted over the batik motifs at a later date to further enhance the value of the cloth. This was commonly done as families renewed their special textiles and further embellished them.
