Red Sacred TextileBali Cepuk
This textile was made by weavers from the cooperative Tenun Ikat Alami in Nusa Penida. Threads of Life works with farmers and weavers across Bali to re-establish natural-dye and sacred weaving traditions, and with the Balinese public to revitalize the role played by these textile in the island’s cultural life.
The cepuk is a very important sacred textile for the Balinese. It is believed to both protect the wearer and to open a devotional connection to the ancestral spirits during various life transition ceremonies between birth and death.

Weft ikat, single panel, commercial cotton thread, hand stitched hemmed edge, natural dyes. Ikat tied, dyed and woven in Nusa Penida, Bali, 2021.
