Beti NaekMan's Hip Cloth
Beti naek is a man’s hip cloth. The word beti mean cloth and naek means large. This cloth is from the Miomafo region in the central part of West Timor. This area is famous for its intricate blue-black ikat patterning.
The central motif throughout this textile is a hook pattern called ma’kaif. The hooks speak to the interconnectedness between society, nature and the divine ancestor. This textile is the result of working for more than twelve years with a group of two dozen women to recover the blue indigo dyeing process without using synthetic dyes.
Made in Miomafo, Timor, 2019.
