Beit AnaWoman’s Shoulder Cloth
Beit Ana is a narrow shoulder cloth worn by women for ceremonies or special occasions. The textiles of Miomafo area of Timor, where this textile is from, are renown for their deep indigo work and intricate motifs.
The motif on this cloth is called beso or frog motif. You can see the connecting layers of frogs as you look at this textile — a head with splayed feet and arms. It is considered a representation of the ancestor. When you pray for rains and the first rains come, the frogs can be heard signalling the ancestor acknowledges your prayers.
