Aluk is a traditional betelnut bag worn to complete ceremonial dress. This unusual and exquisite bag is made using the time consuming techniques of warp wrapping buna, supplementary patterning sotis and slit tapestry weave nais or kelim weave.
The betelnut quid includes the piper betel leaf from the pepper plant, a slice of nut from the Arecea catechu palm and lime. It is brought when visiting and the host and guests exchange betelnut before beginning any other conversation.
Fine design
Warp wrap patterning, supplementary warp patterning, slit tapestry weave, single panel sewn into a bag with strap attached, commercial cotton, natural dyes. Made in Mollo, Timor, 2020.
