Stole, bed throw, matching pillows

Stole, bed throw, matching pillows

This stole that also can function as a bed throw along with matching pillows is made from a woman’s sarong from East Sumba and handspun cotton from Java. A textile such as this sarong would be worn by an older woman of nobility. The motif is embroidered on an all indigo dyed background and depicts a lion with the human face. Dutch coins with rampant lions are likely what would have inspired this motif as lions do not exist in Sumba but were clearly seen as symbols of power.

We have backed the sarong by hand stitching a handspun cotton cloth from Java dyed with Ceriops tagal. We have designed and and sewn it in a way that the fringing and macramé edging of the Java cloth is integral to the hand and foot of the Sumbanese cloth. We have done the same with the pillows that combine the Sumba cloth with Javanese cloth keeping the fringing and macramé as a central feature.
