Woman’s Shoulder Cloth

This shoulder cloth uses the traditional motifs that are found on the red, blue, black sekomandi textiles. The black and white using tannins from Homolanthus sp. And mud predates the use of colour among this ethnic group the To Mangki Karataun.

The primary motif is called ulu karua which refers to the eight traditional leaders each having specific roles in the community such as ritual, land administration, agricultural cycles and social relationships.

Warp ikat, single panel, open fringe, commercial cotton, natural dyes.
Made by Adolfina in karataun. 2019.
