Mau Tnanaf

Shawl

Timor has a wide range of textiles with various techniques including ikat, supplementary warp patterning and supplementary warp wrap called buna which this textile is a fine example of.  The supplementary warp wrap hooked pattern motif is called ma’kaif which refers to the importance of interconnection in all things. This time-consuming art form of wrapping each warp thread to create a pattern can take up to 4 months to do a cloth such as this.

Supplementary warp wrap patterning, single panel, open fringe, cotton thread, natural dyes. Woven in Amanuban, Timor, 2019.
