Mau Ana

Woman’s Shoulder Cloth

The weavers of Amanuban have a wide range of textiles with various techniques including: ikat, supplementary warp wrap called buna, and supplementary warp patterning called sotis. There are a few remote areas that still weave kilim patterns locally called naisa.

The ikat patterning on this exquisite mud dyed cloth is called ma’kaif or a hooked pattern. It relates to interconnectedness: people to people, people to land, people to animals, and plant life and people to the Divine ancestor.

Warp ikat, single panel, commercial cotton, twisted fringe, natural dyes. Made by Ace Beni in Amanuban, 2019.
