Cerik Langah

Woman’s Breast Wrap

Cerik langah means a cloth woven with spacing. This cloth has been woven on a backstrap loom using a slit tapestry technique. Traditionally this type of open weave textile was worn as a breast wrap and used for ritual dance throughout Bali. Each kingdom or region had their own type of open weave cloth. The spaces are said to be the way that the dancer is able to shift between the world’s of human and the Divine.

This project with Threads of Life and Pejeng weavers is to revitalise old styles of Balinese ritual textiles that were discontinued being made in the 1970’s and 80’s as women were encouraged to find other means of livelihood – leaving the loom to carry bricks and sand for roadwork. We are very excited to have this textile once again back in the repertoire of Pejeng weavers. We have a couple of these for sale and one on the loom.

Slit Tapestry, single panel, twisted fringe, commercial cotton, natural dyes. Dyed threads by threads of Life Dye Studio.
