An Introduction to
Indonesian Textiles:
This 2-hour class
contrasts the most common textile production techniques found in Indonesia. We explore the
various ikat, batik and supplementary weaving techniques; the differences
between handspun and commercial threads, natural and chemical dyes, backstrap
and mechanical loom weaving; and the motifs from the more prominent weaving
areas.
Textiles & their Use in Indonesian Culture:
This 3-hour
class examines the history and traditional uses of textiles in Indonesia.
Influences from the spice trade can be seen throughout the archipelago's
textiles juxtaposed with indigenous motifs: echoes of Indian trade cloths
abound; imagery relates to defining aspects of the local environment; history
and genealogy entwine. Uses range from traditional dress, and offerings, to the
paraphernalia of marriages and funerals. |
